Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent, faced criticism from Republican staffers outside the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s (DSCC) headquarters. The confrontation came after Sanders and other Democrats supported Maine’s Senate candidate Graham Platner, who has been involved in several controversies.
A video released by Fox News Digital captured Republicans, including National Republican Senatorial Committee staffers, mocking Platner by wearing towels. This was in reference to a sexually suggestive profile photo of Platner on Kik, showing him shirtless with a towel. Protesters questioned Sanders on his support for Platner, who has faced significant scrutiny.
Platner’s campaign struggles with various issues. He was criticized for a tattoo considered a Nazi symbol, which he has since covered. He has also been condemned for past Reddit posts that blamed rape victims, encouraged political violence, and mocked a Purple Heart veteran. These posts have stirred doubts about his suitability as a candidate.
“Do you support Graham Platner even though he’s on Kik?” a protester asked Sanders.
Recently, reports surfaced that Platner sent explicit texts to women during his marriage. His Kik profile, featuring a shirtless image, added to his woes. Kik’s reputation as an app linked to child exploitation has amplified the criticism.
Signs such as “Platner is a creep!” and “Delete your Kik!” were part of the protest outside the DSCC. Republican staffers aimed to expose Platner’s alleged predatory behavior.
When confronted, Sanders replied, “Are you with the Republican party?” suggesting the Republican focus on morality might be ironic given President Trump’s controversies.
Fox News has not confirmed that Platner communicated with minors. The Kik account raises concerns due to the app’s reputation and the suggestive nature of the profile photo. Other issues, including explicit texts, contribute to his controversial image.
Platner and Sanders appeared together during a “Fighting Oligarchy” event at the University of Maine. Platner contests some of the media reporting on his personal life. He has apologized for prior online comments and revised his tattoo, claiming ignorance of its Nazi connotations at the time.
The DSCC confrontation highlights Republicans’ efforts to leverage Platner’s controversies against national Democrats, including Sanders, as the Maine Democratic Senate primary on June 9 approaches.
