Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro to four years and two months in prison. The conviction relates to his actions to influence the trial of his father, ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years for a coup attempt.
All five justices agreed that Eduardo Bolsonaro lobbied the U.S. government to pressure Brazilian officials to halt the trial. Justice Alexandre de Moraes criticized Eduardo Bolsonaro for acting against his country.
After living in Texas since February 2025, Eduardo Bolsonaro disputed the verdict, claiming insufficient evidence. His conviction comes amid strained Brazil-U.S. relations.
In response to Jair Bolsonaro’s prosecution, then U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil. While relations with current Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva seemed to improve, the U.S. proposed further tariffs in June due to alleged unfair trade practices by Brazil.
Lula shared documents during his May visit to Washington showing a U.S. trade surplus with Brazil. Meanwhile, Eduardo Bolsonaro is campaigning for his brother, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, who faces a scandal while preparing to challenge Lula in upcoming elections.
Eduardo Bolsonaro recently joined his brother on a visit to U.S. officials, including Trump, in Washington.
