2 weeks ago 0

Cristian Mungiu’s drama Fjord, set in Norway, has earned the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This marks the second time Mungiu has received this prestigious award, following his win for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. The film is praised for its captivating narrative on political polarization.

The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as Romanian Evangelicals who move to Norway and face challenges when their children are taken away by child services. Mungiu describes the film as a statement against fundamentalism.

Mungiu stated, “Today the society is split. It’s divided. It’s radicalized. This film is a pledge against any type of fundamentalism.”

Mungiu is now among a select group of filmmakers with two Palme d’Or victories. The win extends Neon’s notable success streak, securing seven consecutive Palme d’Or winners.

The festival’s Grand Prix was awarded to Minotaur, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. This film, a domestic thriller set against the backdrop of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, highlights a Russian businessman’s suspicions about his wife.

Zvyagintsev pleaded, “The only person who can stop this butchery is you, Mr. President of the Russian Federation.”

Despite a quieter year, the festival concluded with awards that promise to elevate the international profiles of the winning films.

The jury, led by Park Chan-wook, also awarded best director honors to Pawel Pawlikowski for Fatherland and to Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo for The Black Ball. Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto shared the best actress award for All of a Sudden, while best actor went to Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne for Coward.

Emmanuel Marre received the best screenplay award for A Man of His Time, while Valeska Grisebach’s The Dreamed Adventure won the jury prize. The Camera d’Or for the best first film was awarded to Marie Clémentine Dusabejambo’s Ben’Imana, the first Rwandan film selected for Cannes.
