Carlos Mencia, a well-known comedian, has pleaded not guilty to 12 felony charges involving tax evasion. These accusations assert Mencia failed to report or pay taxes on earnings exceeding $8 million. The 58-year-old faced arraignment in a Los Angeles County court, where his bail was lowered from $250,000 to $50,000. Mencia was jailed since his arrest but has now posted bail, though his release status is uncertain. Attempts to reach his attorney for comments were unsuccessful.
The charges include six counts for failing to file personal income taxes from 2019 to 2024, aiming to evade taxes, and six counts related to corporate taxes. District Attorney Nathan Hochman criticized Mencia’s tax errors, labeling him as one of California’s significant tax violators. Mencia supposedly owes over $300,000 in state taxes, with his reported income amounting to $8.7 million. Conviction on all counts could result in over 11 years of imprisonment.
This case marks the first under the newly formed Business Tax Fraud Unit, established by Hochman in May. Mencia, originally named Ned Arnel Holness, was born in Honduras and grew up in East Los Angeles. Starting his stand-up career in LA clubs during the late 1980s, his popularity soared by the early 2000s. He starred in the TV series “Mind of Mencia” from 2005 to 2008, combining stand-up comedy with sketch performances on Comedy Central. Despite the charges, he continues performing stand-up at various venues, although recent events led him to miss shows in Southern California.
