Cecilia Vega Criticizes CBS News Management Post-Firing

Cecilia Vega, the former ’60 Minutes’ correspondent, has openly criticized CBS News’ management after her termination in May. At the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Conference & Expo, Vega shared her experiences, expressing initial hesitation but ultimately deciding to speak out.

According to audio from the event obtained by Status News, Vega emphasized the broader implications of her experience, stating, “It’s not only about losing a job. Much more is at risk.” She encouraged taking action despite fear.

“Sometimes you got to be scared and do it still.”

Vega described an incident while reporting on anti-ICE protests in Minnesota. Her team was allegedly urged to include questionable footage and statements but found “no credible examples.” She claimed misinformation was involved in requests for reporting misleading moments involving Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

At a press conference, Frey had addressed public demands for police to confront ICE agents, labeling it an improbable scenario. Vega found no evidence supporting the supposed exchange with a local police chief.

Vega also revealed being directed to present a report on President Donald Trump’s conflict with Iran using a specific narrative which she thought reflected administration messaging. When questioned about the impact on her reporting, she asserted such examples did not make it to air.

Despite not naming individuals directly, Vega hinted at the influence of CBS’s new editorial leadership, expressing her lack of opportunity to discuss her dismissal with Bari Weiss, the current editor-in-chief.

“I don’t know why I was fired,” Vega said. “It’s been about three months now… and I don’t know. I was not given a reason. I still have not been given a reason.”

A CBS News spokesperson denied her allegations, claiming her statements are “not based in reality.” Bari Weiss previously noted that editorial control aligns with the role of an editor-in-chief.

Vega’s termination occurred amidst a broader shakeup that also saw the departure of fellow correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, executive producer Tanya Simon, and veteran correspondent Scott Pelley following a conflict with the new executive producer.
