In the world of figure skating, particularly in the ice dance category, Madison Chock and Evan Bates have made quite a name for themselves as a United States team. Their career is filled with significant achievements, yet they have not yet captured the ultimate accolade: an Olympic gold medal. This could change on Wednesday night during the ice dance final.
After delivering a second-place performance with their rhythm dance routine, Chock and Bates are poised to compete for gold. Despite having clinched three consecutive world championships and three consecutive Grand Prix Finals, the pair’s best Olympic finish so far has been fourth place.
The main competitors standing in their way are the French team of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, who had the highest rhythm dance score in the initial round. The competition is incredibly tight, with just a 0.46-point difference separating the two teams.
An additional layer of complexity to this contest is the fact that both pairs are coached by the same team: Patrice Lauzon, Marie-France Dubreuil, and Romain Haguenauer at the esteemed Ice Academy of Montreal. Regarding how they manage their time with the coaches compared to their competitors, Chock explained the importance of self-advocacy.
“I think the coaches do their very best to ensure that everyone has what they need and feel supported. And if there’s something that we need, we can just ask,” Chock said. “They’re very open. We have a great relationship with them, and at this point in our careers, we are the biggest advocates for ourselves, more so than anyone else because we know what we need.”
Cizeron, the reigning gold medalist in ice dance, returned to this discipline with Fournier Beaudry, shocking many as he had previously retired with then-partner Gabriella Papadakis in December 2024. Upon forming the new partnership last March, Cizeron and Fournier Beaudry began training at the Ice Academy, which took Chock and Bates by surprise.
Chock voiced the unexpected nature of this development, stating, “We really didn’t get much forewarning that they were coming back and teaming up.” Despite the unforeseen challenge, she emphasized that it did not alter their own goals or dedication to their craft.
As Chock and Bates prepare for their free dance performance, their objectives remain clear and attainable. They are determined to execute a flawless performance to secure the elusive Olympic gold medal in Milan. Their journey unfolding in front of them reflects their dedication and relentless pursuit of success.
