Visitors observed National Park Service employees using vacuums to clean the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. The pool recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation. President Trump claimed on Truth Social that several arrests were made in connection with alleged sabotage of the pool.
Trump stated, ‘The United States Park Police have arrested multiple individuals for vandalizing our Nation’s magnificent Reflecting Pool.’ He emphasized the seriousness of these offenses and announced that work on repairs would start immediately. However, as of the report’s release, no law enforcement agencies confirmed these arrests.
One arrest was verified. Former Olympian David Hearn, a Maryland resident, was charged with destroying government property. Hearn contended he only reached into the pool to touch an already dislodged piece and denied the charges.
Regarding the alleged damage, Trump claimed in detail that a 250-foot-long gash was cut into the pool’s new lining. He mentioned suspects allegedly pouring corrosive chemicals into the pool, linking these actions to the pool’s recent green hue. No evidence was provided to support these claims.
Experts attributed the pool’s discoloration to a natural algae bloom. Specialists stated that shallow, sun-exposed water bodies commonly experience such blooms. Despite the discoloration, a George Mason University professor confirmed the algae were not toxic.
The renovation of the Reflecting Pool grew significantly in scope and cost. Initially estimated at $2 million, the project surpassed $14 million upon completion. The renovation aimed to repaint the pool floor in ‘American flag blue’ for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
A Virginia contractor secured the project through a no-bid contract, while an Ohio company was paid $1.7 million for nanobubble ozone technology used to treat the algae bloom. The Cultural Landscape Foundation filed a lawsuit, accusing the administration of bypassing historic preservation reviews.
The White House provided no evidence linking vandalism to the pool’s discoloration or structural damage claims made by Trump. As discussions continue, the situation around the Reflecting Pool remains unresolved.
