Houston (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo achieved a remarkable feat on Tuesday, becoming the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments. The veteran forward’s two goals contributed significantly to Portugal’s victory over Uzbekistan.
At 41, Ronaldo marked history early in the match, scoring in the sixth minute. João Cancelo delivered the ball to Ronaldo, who then made the score 1-0 with a right-footed shot. Following his goal, Ronaldo celebrated enthusiastically with his teammates.
Ronaldo’s second goal arrived in the 39th minute. Bruno Fernandes set him up for another successful right-footed shot, which went inside the near post, advancing the score to 3-0. This performance bolstered Ronaldo’s status as the second-oldest player to score at a World Cup, with Cameroon’s Roger Milla holding the record at age 42 during the 1994 tournament.
These goals addressed criticism Ronaldo faced after Portugal’s 1-1 draw with Congo in their opening match. Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi made history this year as the only men to play in six World Cup tournaments. Since Ronaldo’s debut in 2006, he has scored in each event, whereas Messi did not score during the 2010 World Cup.
Ronaldo’s contributions to the tournament now total 10 goals. In contrast, Messi has scored 18, including a hat trick in Argentina’s match against Algeria and two more goals against Austria, making him the highest scorer in World Cup history.
The game against Uzbekistan marked Ronaldo’s 230th international appearance, solidifying his record for the most appearances ever.
This World Cup may be Ronaldo’s last. His illustrious career includes winning the European Championship with Portugal in 2016 and five Champions League titles with Manchester United and Real Madrid.
