Debate Over Illinois’ Official State Sandwich

1 week ago 0

In Springfield, known for the horseshoe sandwich, state Rep. Rick Ryan, D-Evergreen Park, presented a bold proposal. He suggested that Illinois should replace its current official state sandwich, the horseshoe, with the Italian beef. He described the Italian beef as a rich combination of flavors and textures, especially when properly seasoned and thoroughly dipped. To add weight to his proposal, Ryan was joined by actor Corey Hendrix from the FX series “The Bear,” a show that highlights the Italian beef.

This discussion highlights a long-standing competition between Chicagoland and downstate Illinois. Although the horseshoe has sporadically appeared in Chicago, such as at TriBecca’s Sandwich Shop in Avondale, it’s not prevalent. Other potential outlets like 6 Degrees in Bucktown seem to have closed. Meanwhile, Italian beef is a staple throughout the region, with establishments like Johnnie’s Beef in Forest Park being renowned for their dipped offerings. Al’s #1 and Luke’s, situated near downtown, also offer excellent versions of this beloved dish. Mr. Beef remains legendary, even offering a taste of beef at Midway International Airport.

Ryan argues that the Italian beef should claim the title of the official state sandwich. He believes the horseshoe, associated with political deals, has served its time. Although Ryan’s effort for change seemed destined for success, the outcome was a compromise. The horseshoe retained the title of the official open-faced sandwich of Illinois, a designation likened to French tartines or Danish smørrebrød, and not much of a sandwich in the traditional sense.

As Memorial Day approaches, many of the well-known Italian beef vendors may close, but Chicago-style food stands remain open, offering diverse options including gyros, brats, beef sandwiches, Jibaritos, tacos, lemonade, and hand-cut fries. These local eateries provide an ideal way to enjoy a leisurely day.
