Democracy’s Stand: A Call to Action

President Trump and his allies are challenging the fragile foundations of American democracy. He recently called the California primary election “rigged” and his FBI raided an Ohio voter registration group. These actions remind us of similar events in 2020.

However, there are steps we can take to protect and strengthen democracy in our country. Wisconsin’s experience offers a blueprint. As the former chair of the Democratic Party in Wisconsin, I witnessed the state transition from a “democracy desert” to a competitive battleground. This change shows that improvement is possible nationwide.

We need to act now to transform political unease into constructive efforts. Our goal should be to ensure that democracy provides free and fair elections for all parties. This effort will require cooperation from Democrats, independents, and Republicans who desire a stronger, more equitable political system.

Convincing people to change their voting decisions is difficult, yet crucial. Interestingly, only a small number of votes have had significant impacts. For instance, in 2024, merely 7,309 votes across three closely contested districts secured the House majority for Republicans, prolonging Mike Johnson’s leadership.

Democracy’s survival hinges on grassroots organization, voter engagement, and a commitment to fair elections. Every American can contribute to this effort and make a difference.
