Democratic Lawmakers Advocate for Paid Menstrual Leave

5 days ago 0

In late May, Democratic lawmakers expressed concerns about the lack of paid leave for employees experiencing painful menstruation. They labeled the situation as “economic violence.” At a press conference on May 21, Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., stated that workers shouldn’t have to choose between paying rent or losing a day’s pay due to medical necessities.

Grijalva was accompanied by Reps. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., in support of Ansari’s Reproductive Healthcare Leave Act. This act is part of Ansari’s “H.E.R.” (Healthy, Equity, Rights) Agenda. The act would provide 12 days of paid leave annually for reproductive health, covering severe menstrual pain, menopause symptoms, miscarriages, biopsies, vasectomies, and more.

“No one should have to choose between their paycheck and their health to manage incredible pain,” Tlaib emphasized at the event. The legislation would require employers to grant annual paid leave for reproductive health concerns.

In a TIME article, Rep. Ansari shared her personal struggles with menstrual pain, noting instances where she was incapacitated by symptoms. She recounted an episode where she ended up on the floor of a local store due to her condition.

The bill was introduced with 28 Democratic co-sponsors, but no Republican support, leading to mixed reactions. Rhode Island state Rep. Marie Hopkins, R., criticized the bill’s implications on gender identity discussions. Others on social media expressed worries about the bill possibly encouraging hiring discrimination against women or the unfairness towards men with reproductive health issues not covered.

The legislation has the backing of Planned Parenthood, the National Organization for Women, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Despite potential legislative hurdles, Angela Vasquez-Giroux of Planned Parenthood Votes emphasizes the importance of pushing for such initiatives, stating that having a clear vision is crucial even when opposition exists.
