The Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv, a significant Christian landmark, has suffered damage once again due to recent conflict. President Volodymyr Zelensky described it as a major crime against Christian culture. This historic site, originally destroyed during World War II, faced destruction on Monday amidst Russian missile and drone strikes.
More than 80 years after it was first razed, the rebuilt cathedral became a target as part of a broader assault affecting multiple cities. The Ukrainian government reported that the wave of attacks resulted in 11 deaths and injured many others.
Two drones hit the historic monastic complex housing the cathedral. President Zelensky highlighted this incident in a social media post, underscoring its cultural impact.
Videos confirmed by The New York Times depict firefighters using cranes to extinguish the fire, with orange flames visible inside the cathedral. The white exterior contrasted sharply with the blaze within.
Throughout the war, numerous Ukrainian cultural and religious sites have been targeted. The attack on the cathedral is particularly notable amid these repeated assaults.
Mr. Zelensky stressed the significance of this attack. He called it one of the largest Russian offenses against Christian heritage.
Beyond the cathedral, several museums also sustained damage. Additionally, a film studio and a vast collection of costumes were affected, according to Ukraine’s Culture Ministry.
