Disneyland’s Current Status
Disneyland Resort confirmed that it remains open and unaffected by the evacuation zone related to a chemical storage tank threat in nearby Garden Grove, California. The resort has emphasized there is no impact on its operations due to the incident.
We are actively monitoring the situation and taking guidance from local authorities.
The situation involves a pressurized storage tank at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, posing risks of leakage or explosion. The threat has been classified as ‘highly toxic’ to surrounding communities according to emergency officials.
Potential Threats and Evacuations
Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) identified a potential crack in the tank that could lead to severe outcomes, including structural damage and significant harm within the blast radius. Mandatory evacuations have disrupted tens of thousands of residents, affecting travel routes to local tourist sites like Disneyland.
Disneyland Resort reassured guests that it is five miles away from the incident and not in any identified evacuation zone. Consequently, the resort has no plan to evacuate.
Travel Considerations and Updates
Those traveling to Disneyland should anticipate possible road closures and traffic disruptions. The resort advises checking local advice on travel conditions due to these potential issues.
Guests can stay informed through Disneyland’s social media and OCFA’s official channels. The resort will continuously update the public regarding any changes to its operations.
Details of the Chemical Incident
The situation began on May 21 when a 34,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate, a flammable chemical used in plastics, overheated and released vapors. This has led to a significant response from multiple agencies to address the threat.
Exposure to methyl methacrylate can result in irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system, as noted by federal health resources.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency, mobilizing state resources to aid local officials. In a call for further assistance, Newsom’s office sought an emergency declaration from President Donald Trump.
Efforts to Resolve the Crisis
OCFA reported that only one crack was found on the storage tank, with peeling weather stripping noted but not posing additional risk. Continuous monitoring confirms no active chemical leaks.
Approximately 50,000 residents remain under evacuation orders, with emergency shelters set up outside the threat zone. Areas affected include parts of Garden Grove near Ball Road, Trask Avenue, Valley View Street, and Dale Street.
GKN Aerospace is committed to resolving the incident safely and has expressed apologies for disruptions to the community, emphasizing their focus on allowing displaced residents to return home as soon as possible.
