Michelle Goldberg, a columnist for The New York Times, sharply criticized the Democratic National Committee’s recently released 2024 election report. Goldberg described the document as ‘mysterious,’ ‘anticlimactic,’ and ‘ridiculous,’ emphasizing the discontent that surrounded its delayed release.
Goldberg expressed surprise at the lack of depth in the report, pointing out its omission of topics such as ‘Israel’ and ‘Gaza.’ The report fails to address why the Democratic Party struggled to retain the support of Black and Latino men or why it did not connect with irregular voters. Goldberg even questioned the possibility of the report being drafted by artificial intelligence, suggesting such technology might have produced a superior outcome.
The report, labeled a ‘disaster’ by Goldberg, faced criticism from within the party.
Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin initially promised the release of the report but later decided against it, sparking theories and concerns. Goldberg noted this decision led to speculation about motives, including protection of Kamala Harris’s reputation and potential fallout related to Gaza. Other commentators, such as Ramesh Ponnuru from The Washington Post, criticized the report for ignoring key issues like President Joe Biden’s age, the border crisis, and the party’s dwindling appeal to religious voters.
The report, ultimately released by CNN, highlighted several issues contributing to the party’s weakening infrastructure. These include declining voter registration, reduced support for state parties, and failure to engage certain voter demographics. It also stressed the need for renewed focus on voters in Middle America and the South.
Internally, the report has caused friction. Ken Martin, the DNC Chair, publicly disowned the document, stating it didn’t meet his standards. While he acknowledged the necessity for transparency, he released the report without endorsing it, noting parts were unverified.
Calls for further commentary from the DNC have so far gone unanswered. The response within the party suggests ongoing debates about future strategies and reconciliations to re-engage crucial voter groups.
