Palestine is not participating in the World Cup; however, that did not deter Egypt’s coach, Hossam Hassan, from introducing a political element into the match by waving a Palestinian flag on the field. This occurred during Egypt’s victory over Australia in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, held at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, United States, on July 3, 2026.

Hossam Hassan’s gesture quickly spread across social media, accompanied by chants of “Free, free Palestine!” from observers.

After the victory, which was decided by penalty kicks, Hassan expressed his dedication to the “good and noble” people of Egypt and Palestine during the post-match interview. “My heart and soul are with them,” he stated. “I dedicate this victory to the Palestinians. May Allah grant them victory and have mercy on their martyrs.”

The incident raised questions about the presence of Palestinian flags in the tournament. Previously, there were concerns when a Palestinian flag was spotted during the USA’s final group-stage match against Turkey, prompting questions about its place in the event.
