Everett Wess Wins Democratic Senate Nomination in Alabama

1 hour ago 0

Former Judge Everett Wess has secured the Democratic Senate nomination in the predominantly Republican state of Alabama. This race aims to fill the seat left by Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who opted to run for governor this year.

Wess emerged victorious over Dakarai Larriett, a small business owner, in the Democratic Senate runoff. According to the Associated Press, this decision came on Tuesday night.

Last month’s primary saw Wess and Larriett finishing first and second among four candidates. As no candidate achieved over 50% of the vote, both advanced to the runoff election.

Despite his nomination, Wess faces significant challenges in the impending general election against the Republican nominee. Rep. Barry Moore, with backing from President Donald Trump, won against former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson in the GOP nomination runoff.

Alabama’s political landscape presents hurdles for Democrats. Since Doug Jones’ special election win in 2017, a Democratic victory in Senate elections has been a rarity over the past thirty years.

Sen. Tuberville, previously the head football coach at Auburn University, opted to pursue a gubernatorial run rather than seeking re-election to the Senate this year.
