Dr. Anthony Fauci’s diary entries shed light on his interactions with media figures during the COVID-19 crisis. Released by Senator Rand Paul, the diary offers insights into Fauci’s dealings with former President Donald Trump, various governors, world leaders, and the media as the pandemic unfolded in 2020.

Fauci and Media Connections

The diary illustrates Fauci’s close ties with liberal media members. One notable relationship was with CNN anchor Jake Tapper, who appeared 41 times in the entries. The entries reveal discussions between Fauci and Tapper about interviews, with Tapper checking on Fauci after certain broadcasts.

For example, on April 13, 2020, Tapper ensured an interview didn’t cause problems for Fauci. Later, in July 2020, Fauci noted developing a friendship with Tapper, dining at the Tapper’s DC home. In a collaborative effort, Fauci provided Tapper questions for an interview with pediatrician Brett Giroir on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Despite frustrations over a Trump tweet about that interview, Fauci maintained ties with Tapper, inviting him home for dinner in October 2020.

Support from Other Anchors

Beyond Tapper, CNN’s Dana Bash supported Fauci after a heated House Subcommittee hearing in April 2021. Bash commended Fauci and shared comments from fellow CNN journalist Wolf Blitzer. Their connection continued into moderating the CNN Republican Presidential Primary Debate with then-President Biden and President Trump in 2024.

Similarly, Andrea Mitchell of NBC expressed regret to Fauci on July 4, 2020, for not being able to include him on her show due to scheduling conflicts. Fauci addressed concerns about perceived White House restrictions on his TV appearances.

Other Media Interactions

Fauci maintained communication with other media personalities. He shared a discussion with then-NBC News host Chuck Todd, who sought his feedback on an interview. Fauci sought Todd’s advice on addressing public criticisms.

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos also contacted Fauci in July 2020, appreciating Fauci’s response to a derogatory Trump tweet. The diary shows Fauci providing interview preparation for CBS News’ Dr. Jonathan LaPook, mentioned several times due to prior collaborations on technical subjects.
