The ongoing debate between Disney and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding ABC’s “The View” has attracted attention. The FCC questions whether the show qualifies as a bona fide news program. Meanwhile, ABC celebrated a recent surge in viewership following a guest appearance by Vice President JD Vance.
Viewership Milestone
ABC News reported a significant increase in viewers, with last week’s episode featuring Vice President JD Vance drawing in 3.3 million watchers. This marked the show’s highest audience numbers in over 18 months, only surpassed by post-Election Day coverage on November 6, 2024.
The viewership success coincided with ABC launching an advertising campaign advocating for “The View,” urging public support against the FCC’s scrutiny.
ABC’s Fight Against the FCC
Recently, the FCC initiated an investigation into “The View” as part of its enforcement of equal airtime for political candidates. This followed an appearance by Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico on the show. Disney’s ABC contends “The View” is genuine news content, exempt from the equal time policy.
ABC’s campaign includes a petition aiming to establish “The View” as a legitimate news interview program. A promotional commercial aired, encouraging viewers to voice their objections to the FCC’s potential regulation.
The FCC accused Disney of misleading viewers regarding the show’s status. The Media Research Center (MRC) also challenged the FCC, submitting evidence questioning “The View’s” classification as bona fide news.
The MRC’s Evidence
In a formal letter, the MRC presented 2,473 instances demonstrating “The View’s” bias. MRC President David Bozell argued the show serves as a partisan platform rather than a balanced news source.
His argument centered on the show’s trend of promoting singular political viewpoints, thus challenging its eligibility for special regulatory treatment.
FCC’s Stance
In January, the FCC declared it would enforce the statutory equal opportunities requirement for broadcast networks under the Communications Act of 1934. This includes both daytime and late-night talk shows.
Historically, there has been an exception for bona fide news programs, but the FCC expressed skepticism about any current talk show meeting these standards.
Current Host Dynamics of ‘The View’
“The View” has maintained a critical stance towards former President Trump and his administration. In 2025 alone, the program featured 341 guests, with two identified as conservative compared to 128 who were liberal.
Vice President JD Vance’s participation with co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Ana Navarro posed questions about whether more Republican figures might appear on the show in the future.
