Federal Investigation into California Election Amid Fraud Claims

1 hour ago 0

The U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles announced multiple probes into election fraud in California following unverified claims by President Donald Trump. These investigations, confirmed on a Friday, follow Trump’s assertions of widespread fraud during the state’s June 2 primary, where vote counting continues. A prosecutor has been sent to the vote-counting center in the county.

Trump’s statements came as late-counted, Democrat-leaning mail ballots reduced margins for Trump-supported candidates in influential races such as those for governor and Los Angeles mayor. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, appointed by Trump, confirmed these developments, including a visit to the Los Angeles County’s ballot tabulation center.

Trump extended his allegations at a discussion in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. He claimed Republicans were losing due to vote manipulation, without providing evidence. Speaking from the White House later, he insisted on discovering suspicious ballots in the ongoing vote count. Trump also targeted mail-in ballots in his Truth Social posts, criticizing the pace of the count.

“Watching California, everybody! Our Election process is as bad, or worse, than any Third World Country,” Trump posted, expressing dissatisfaction with the timeline of the California vote count.

In another post, he accused Democrats of election fraud, claiming manipulation of results in gubernatorial and mayoral primaries. He criticized delayed vote counting, posing it as suspicious.

California’s Voting System

California consistently leans Democratic in major elections. Joe Biden won the state decisively in the 2020 elections, driven by populous urban counties like Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and Sacramento. Election turnout was high, aided by expanded mail-in voting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, around 80% of votes in the state are mail ballots, with provisions allowing ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted if they arrive within seven days. This supports extended counting periods, a factor in the state’s longer timelines.

Primaries use a “jungle” system, progressing the top two candidates, irrespective of party, to the next round. In tight races, this extends the counting process. California’s Governor Gavin Newsom expressed concern over prolonged vote counts fostering misinformation, underlining the necessity for swift and accurate tabulation.

Election observers have echoed these concerns, emphasizing the importance of accurate elections, while acknowledging that tabulation delays can undermine public confidence and propagate misinformation.

Election Fraud Allegations

Trump’s recent claims align with his broader pattern of voter fraud allegations evident in the aftermath of his 2020 presidential loss. These included claims involving mail-in ballots and voting machine tampering. Over 60 legal challenges emerged post-election in states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, and Michigan.

However, courts, citing inadequate evidence or legal standing, consistently dismissed these claims. Judges across the political spectrum ruled against these cases, emphasizing the lack of merit.
