Footage shared by Patrick Nealis shows agents detaining a protester as Newark Police arrive with additional vehicles. Nealis comments on police efforts to unblock the main entrance allowing vehicles to enter and exit freely.

A coordinated effort from law enforcement just cleared the blockage in front of the main entrance to Delaney Hall enabling a vehicle to leave the facility, Nealis wrote. In addition, it cleared the way for previously blocked vehicles to enter the side entrance.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), overseeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, responded firmly on social media. They stated protesters would face arrest and law enforcement operations would continue undeterred.

Protests at the detention center have increased following reported hunger strikes by detainees due to inadequate living conditions. While advocates raise concerns, the government denies these accusations, suggesting protesters are escalating tensions.

Incident of Protester Hit by Vehicle

Some tried to assist the injured protester while others attempted to block additional vehicles. Nealis describes an intense standoff before vehicles forced their way out.

After an extended standoff between officials and protesters; vehicles exiting Delaney Hall forced their way out, Nealis reported. At least one member in the crowd appears to have been hit by an exiting vehicle.

State Funding for Legal Defense

New Jersey Governor Mike Sherill announced a substantial funding increase aimed at assisting immigrants facing deportation. The state program, Detention Deportation Defense Initiative, will receive over $20 million.

This funding aims to improve legal service access for low-income families, including those detained at Delaney Hall. Governor Sherill emphasized the importance of due process and fair hearings for all individuals.

Additionally, the Rapid Legal Response Initiative will expand immigration defense services across the state. This initiative seeks to enhance legal capacity to support residents affected by federal enforcement actions.

Police Sergeant Charged with Theft

A New Jersey police sergeant faces charges for stealing cameras and equipment from a journalist injured during Delaney Hall protests. Darryl Brown was found in possession of the stolen items traced to his home.

The journalist, Angelina Katsanis, was covering protests for The Associated Press when injured. As she sought medical help, her gear was left behind and later traced via geo-tracking to Sergeant Brown’s home.
