About Roland Garros’ Clay Courts

The red clay courts at the French Open are renowned for creating thrilling tennis matches. The clay comes from a factory in Oise, north of Paris, made from bricks specifically used in France. Every year, 2,000 tonnes of bricks are turned into clay courts. Roland Garros requires up to 80 tonnes for its courts, sourced from bricks with minor imperfections. These are crushed into a fine sand, less than one-tenth of a millimeter in size, making a perfect surface for sliding.

Discover Stade Roland Garros

Stade Roland Garros, located in Paris’s 16th arrondissement, is the only Grand Slam venue with clay courts. Its name is often used for the French Open tournament itself. Court Philippe Chatrier, with its capacity of 15,000 seats, is the biggest. Constructed in 1928, it pays tribute to the era when French tennis was led by the ‘Four Musketeers’—Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet, and Rene Lacoste.

Each stand at Court Philippe Chatrier carries the name of one of these legendary players.
