G7 Summit Focuses on Russia-Ukraine Conflict as Trump and Zelenskyy Set to Meet

1 hour ago 0

Leaders have gathered for the opening session at the G7 summit, focusing on Russia’s war in Ukraine. Attendees include leaders from Italy, Germany, Britain, Japan, and Canada, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Animated discussions are underway while awaiting the arrival of Trump, Zelenskyy, and France’s Emmanuel Macron.

Trump expressed optimism about potential progress in ending the war in Ukraine. He stated plans to refocus efforts on Ukraine after concluding matters with Iran. The U.S. had been involved in brokering peace in the Ukrainian conflict, which has lasted over four years, but efforts have stalled lately. Zelenskyy continues to press Western allies to prioritize Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia.

Meanwhile, energy prices fell amidst a U.S.-Iran agreement to cease fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. crude oil prices dropped 4.8% to $80.75 per barrel, while Brent crude decreased 4.7% to $83.17 per barrel. These prices are the lowest since early March, soon after the conflict with Iran began.

Vice President JD Vance confirmed the return of nuclear inspectors to Iran under the terms of a U.S.-Iran agreement to end conflict in the Middle East. Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency and the U.S. will assist Iran in destroying its highly enriched uranium stockpile. The agreement, detailed in a memorandum of understanding, will be formally signed Friday in Switzerland.

Trump will face European allies who disagree with him over two conflicts. The president is expected to be questioned about initiating the conflict with Iran and urged to increase action to stop the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains will address both these issues prominently.
