Senator Lindsey Graham and UFC CEO Dana White have openly criticized UFC heavyweight Josh Hokit after his controversial remarks about Michelle Obama. These comments followed Hokit’s victory at the UFC Freedom 250 event held at the White House.
Hokit’s statements during the post-fight interview ignited backlash as he repeated false conspiracy theories targeting the former first lady. After defeating Derrick Lewis, Hokit expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for hosting the event and concluded the interview with commentary from UFC’s Joe Rogan by making the unfounded claim: “Michelle Obama is a man, am I right, America?”
Senator Graham expressed his disapproval on Monday through TMZ, labeling Hokit’s comments as “not good” and referring to him as an “idiot.” He mentioned that the inappropriate remarks detracted from the celebration of America’s founding, intended to honor national unity through a display of modern-day gladiatorial spirit and sportsmanship.
“It was a fun event, meant to celebrate America’s founding, who we are as a nation,” Graham noted. “That was not the spirit of sports,” he added, underscoring his reaction upon hearing Hokit’s statement.
Graham further reiterated: “The guy was an idiot,” showing his strong objection to the negativity brought to the event.
UFC CEO Dana White also condemned Hokit’s remarks, communicating via a text message to Time magazine. White emphasized his stance on free speech but criticized the spread of false and derogatory comments about public figures and their families.
“I understand that the Obamas are public figures but I’m completely against saying nasty and false things about people’s families,” White said. “Everyone knows my position on free speech but I hate that kind of nonsense,” he concluded.
The story is ongoing and more information is anticipated.
