Hadley Middle School Honored as a National Gold Star School

Recognition and Achievement

Hadley Middle School in Homer Glen, Illinois, received the National Gold Star School award from the National Association of Elementary School Principals. It is one of four schools in Illinois to earn this recognition. The association acknowledged 57 schools nationwide for their leadership, innovation, and dedication to student success. Principal Kristen Schroeder emphasized the focus on student-centered decisions in the school’s daily operations.

Application Process

School leaders submitted a thorough application detailing how Hadley Middle School established its culture, shared values, and vision. They engaged families, empowered students and teachers, and nurtured community support based on the association’s pillars of a successful learning community. Letters of recommendation came from teachers, parents, Homer District 33C Superintendent Craig Schoppe, and former school board member and teacher Karen DeFilippis. The application took about three months to prepare, involving essays and evidence showcasing the school’s successes.

Wide Impact

The excitement of receiving the award was immense for Principal Schroeder and Assistant Principal Holly Odom. Odom noted the pride in showcasing the efforts of both teachers and students. Hadley Middle School students participated in activities such as packaging food for the nonprofit Feed My Starving Children, demonstrating community engagement. The school’s leaders shared the news with students, who calculated the percentage of schools nationwide that earned the award, illustrating their enthusiasm and academic skills.

School Initiatives

Schroeder mentioned the school’s commitment to student excellence through strong relationships and a supportive culture. Hadley Middle School has several organizations promoting academic and leadership growth. The Student Council sets a positive tone and assists with assemblies and celebrations. Student leaders perform skits at the annual Student Expectations Assembly to illustrate behavioral expectations. The Mustang Shout-Out campaign allows students to nominate peers for positive contributions.

Embracing Diversity

The Multicultural Club celebrates diverse backgrounds with fairs featuring ethnic food, dances, and presentations. The Hadley Literacy Committee boosts students’ writing abilities and test scores. Schroeder highlighted that a school’s greatness stems from every individual’s contribution. Focusing on students’ best interests is key to success.

Looking Ahead

Students learn self-advocacy and feel their voice is valued. Hadley Middle School will receive the award in July in Florida. Other Illinois schools recognized include Pleasantdale Elementary School in La Grange, St. Giles School in Oak Park, and St. Benedict Preparatory School in Chicago, both affiliated with the Archdiocese of Chicago.
