An officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) received commendation from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for delivering critical medical care to a motorist injured in a severe accident. Officer Curtland Sawyer’s timely intervention has been hailed as heroic.
On July 11, Sawyer, who works at ICE’s St. Louis sub-office, was on his way home when he witnessed a vehicle collide with a tractor-trailer near Festus, Missouri. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Sawyer immediately stopped to offer assistance.
Sawyer’s quick response included applying a tourniquet to the driver’s arm to control life-threatening bleeding. He stayed with the injured individual until emergency medical technicians arrived to take over the care.
In her statement, DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis called Sawyer a hero, saying, “Officer Sawyer is a hero. Our officers are the best of the best. When they see someone in need, they act swiftly to help. If you encounter an ICE officer, acknowledge their commitment to our nation.”
This incident is among several recent rescues highlighted by DHS that showcase the dedication of ICE officers. Last month, an ICE officer performed CPR on a child whom he rescued from a Florida swimming pool. In another event, ICE officers in Milwaukee helped a woman trapped in her overturned vehicle after a crash caused by another driver running a red light.
