On Friday evening, Israeli troops shot and killed a seven-month-old Palestinian infant, Sam Fahd Abu Haikal, in the occupied West Bank. This event took place in the Tel Rumeida area south of Hebron City, as reported by the Palestinian health ministry.
The official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, detailed that the infant was critically injured by a bullet that also wounded his mother. Both parents were driving from Bethlehem to Hebron to visit family when the shooting occurred. The father, Fahd Abu Haikal, is a lecturer at Bethlehem University and was wounded in the hand.
Photos from the Associated Press show damage to the vehicle, including a visible bullet hole in the windshield. The car seat, where the infant was struck, was situated behind the driver’s seat.
“It entered the child’s face on the right side and exited on the left, then passed directly into his mother’s face,” Fahd Abu Haikal explained at Al-Ahly Hospital in Hebron. The mother sustained injuries with shrapnel near her heart and remains in critical condition. The family has not informed her of the infant’s death.
The Israeli military has escalated operations in the West Bank after the October 2023 Hamas attack that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 individuals. The ongoing conflict has led to significant casualties in Gaza, with more than 72,900 Palestinians reported killed according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson stated that soldiers perceived a “vehicle accelerating toward them” in Hebron, prompting a soldier to fire “single shots.” The spokesperson confirmed three Palestinians were injured, with an investigation ongoing, expressing regret for harm to non-combatants.
The infant’s grandmother, Feryal Abu Heikal, recounted that they approached a road checkpoint and initially mistook the gunfire for warning shots before realizing they were targeted. The experience has left her distraught and questioning military actions.
The British Consulate in Jerusalem reacted with “shock and sadness,” calling for an “immediate and transparent investigation.” They emphasized the importance of protecting civilians.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence, with the United Nations reporting over 1,000 Palestinians killed in the West Bank and east Jerusalem since the conflict began, including at least 240 children.
Organizations such as Israeli rights group Yesh Din highlight that alleged misconduct by Israeli soldiers rarely results in penalties. Between 2016 and 2024, only a small fraction of complaints led to indictments.
The occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem remain tense, with over 700,000 Israelis residing in these areas, territories seized by Israel in 1967 and claimed by Palestinians for a future state.
