Israel and Lebanon Agree to Ceasefire After Trilateral Meeting

2 days ago 0

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a ceasefire following a trilateral meeting facilitated by the United States on Tuesday and Wednesday. The U.S. State Department announced the agreement in a release.

The ceasefire comes after U.S. President Donald Trump communicated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives of Hezbollah’s leadership on Monday. Both parties agreed to cease hostilities.

However, hostilities continued on Monday evening. The Israeli military reported two intercepted projectiles from Lebanon into northern Israel, according to Reuters. Additionally, the Associated Press reported that Israel conducted strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs earlier on Monday.

Commitments and Conditions

The State Department’s Wednesday release emphasized that the ceasefire is contingent upon ‘a complete cessation of Hizbollah fire and the evacuation of all Hizbollah operatives from the South Litani Sector.’

A joint statement outlined the commitments of the three governments to restore stability and enhance security arrangements in Lebanon. It stressed that future relations between Israel and Lebanon should be determined by their sovereign governments.

The ceasefire initiative could be viewed as a diplomatic win for the Trump administration, which aims to combine military pressure with negotiated agreements to prevent further conflict in the region.

In a social media post on Monday, President Trump stated, ‘I had a conversation with Bibi Netanyahu today, asking him not to go into a major raid of Beirut, Lebanon. He turned his troops around. Thank you, Bibi! I also had a conversation with Representatives of the Leaders of Hezbollah, and they agreed to stop shooting at Israel, and its soldiers. Likewise, Israel agreed to stop shooting at them. Let’s see how long that lasts — Hopefully, it will be for ETERNITY!’

The State Department release also mentioned that all parties condemned Iran’s attacks in the region and activities undermining stability in the Middle East.

Previously, a ceasefire between the two countries had been in place since mid-April, as reported by the AP.

This is a developing story that will be updated with new information as it becomes available.
