Federal Investigation into E. Jean Carroll’s Legal Battles
The United States Department of Justice has initiated an investigation linked to two lawsuits filed by E. Jean Carroll, a former magazine writer aged 82. She had accused Donald J. Trump of sexual assault, according to a report by The New York Times.
The inquiry focuses on contributions from a nonprofit founded by Reid Hoffman, the billionaire co-founder of LinkedIn and a vocal critic of Mr. Trump. These funds were used to cover some expenses of Ms. Carroll’s legal efforts. The specific charges that could emerge remain uncertain at this stage.
Responses and Statements from Involved Parties
Andrew S. Boutros, the U.S. Attorney in Chicago, clarified that his office has not initiated a criminal investigation against Ms. Carroll. He remained silent on matters concerning Mr. Hoffman, who addressed the situation on social media.
Mr. Hoffman remarked, “Trump was found liable for sexually assaulting E Jean Carroll, defaming her, and now he’s going after her again.” He further stated, “Mr. Trump is investigating me because I supported E Jean’s lawsuit.” Ms. Carroll has not made any comments, as relayed by her representative.
Challenges for Prosecutors in Potential Charges
The Justice Department’s inquiry could face several obstacles if it leads to charges in what critics describe as a retaliatory effort by Mr. Trump against his adversaries.
One critical point involves statements made by Ms. Carroll during legal proceedings. In April 2023, Mr. Trump’s lawyers, who were managing his civil suits, notified the presiding judge before the initial trial. They accused Ms. Carroll of not disclosing financial backing that Mr. Hoffman offered in support of her lawsuit.
