Death of Kentucky Defensive Lineman Nic Smith
Nic Smith, a defensive lineman for the University of Kentucky, has died at the age of 20. The university confirmed the tragic news through an official announcement.
Background on Nic Smith
Smith was a redshirt freshman with the Wildcats during the last season. Known for his vibrant personality, he was fondly called ‘Happy’ and ‘Big Happ’ by those close to him. Smith was also a sophomore in the community leadership and development program within the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. He previously demonstrated his athletic skills in both football and basketball at Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia.

Kentucky coach Will Stein expressed heartfelt condolences on Monday, stating, “Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew and loved him.” He emphasized the university community’s intention to support each other and honor Smith’s memory during this difficult time.
Investigation Details
A university spokesperson reported that campus police responded to a report at an on-campus residence hall regarding a possible deceased individual. Following the investigation, the university confirmed Smith’s death, mentioning that initial findings do not suggest foul play was involved. The University of Kentucky Police Department is collaborating with the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner for further examination.
