A sinkhole was discovered near a runway at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport, causing flight disruptions and several cancellations on Wednesday. The depression was detected by crews during a routine airfield inspection.

Details of the Discovery

The hole was found at approximately 11 a.m. near Runway 4/22, according to airport officials. The area was immediately closed for safety, with emergency construction and engineering crews dispatched to determine the cause and carry out necessary repairs.

“The runway was immediately shut down, and emergency construction and engineering crews are onsite to determine the cause and complete necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible,” LaGuardia Airport stated on its X account.

Communication and Impact on Flights

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey communicated closely with airlines to provide updates. Passengers were advised to check flight status directly with their airlines due to mounting delays and cancellations.

Adding to the disruption, thunderstorms were forecast, threatening to worsen travel conditions. By Wednesday afternoon, departures from LaGuardia were delayed by an average of 30 minutes. Arrival delays averaged around 38 minutes, as reported by FlightAware.
