Emergency Shelters Set Up for Evacuees

Authorities have established new emergency shelters to aid residents displaced by the ongoing hazardous materials incident in Garden Grove. The Orange County Fire Authority announced late Friday that Kennedy High School in La Palma is now a part of the growing list of shelters. Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach opened Saturday, along with Savanna High School in Anaheim and Freedom Hall at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

By Saturday morning, many evacuees had arrived at Kennedy High, where the American Red Cross managed the evacuation center inside the gymnasium. Support at the shelter came from various groups, including police officers, school staff, and workers from a nearby grocery store. Denise Guerrero, 70, one resident affected, described being evacuated multiple times from her home near the source of the chemical leak.

Firefighters Working to Stabilize Crisis

Firefighters are stabilizing the tank’s temperature, previously reaching alarming levels. While temperatures in the compromised tank at GKN Aerospace have been stabilized at 90 degrees Celsius, hazardous outcomes remain possible. Officials indicated the tank could either explode or rupture, releasing thousands of gallons of toxic methyl methacrylate.

We have all of our folks, and you name it, working on what our other options could be, said Orange County Fire Authority division chief and hazardous materials program manager Nick Freeman.

Efforts to mitigate risks included using drones for temperature readings and deploying emergency response teams to address internal cooling failures of the tank.

Evacuees Face Challenges

Cypress Community Center has emptied as evacuees move to other shelters. Financial and logistical issues have arisen for many families as hotels become costly during the holiday weekend. Pets were a specific concern as families struggled to find pet-friendly accommodations.

Nathalie from Anaheim expressed worries about returning home, and whether the crisis would leave lasting health impacts.

Emergency Response and Communication

State officials have declared a state of emergency, with multiple evacuation centers established for the displaced. However, residents have expressed frustration over the lack of timely updates. Authorities continuously monitor air quality and temperature metrics to assess danger levels.

Public health officials warn of potential vapors from the chemical having negative health effects, and stress the importance of staying outside the evacuation areas.

Company and Political Reactions

Officials and political figures, including State Senator Tom Umberg, have stressed the seriousness of the situation, urging residents to evacuate. Congressman Derek Tran called on GKN Aerospace to take responsibility for the distress caused by the crisis. The company’s site has a history of safety violations unrelated to the current tank incident.

Efforts to resolve the crisis continue as authorities explore all options to secure residents’ safety and mitigate hazards.
