Measles Exposure at Los Angeles International Airport

1 hour ago 0

A traveler with measles may have exposed others to the virus at Los Angeles International Airport and a nearby hotel, health officials stated on Wednesday. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating this case involving a traveler who arrived on Cathay Pacific Flight CX 884 on June 11.

The infected traveler passed through Los Angeles County, raising concerns about potential exposure at LAX and the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel. This incident represents the sixth reported measles case in Los Angeles County this year. Health officials caution that the risk of exposure might increase as international travel surges during the summer, especially with the FIFA World Cup events in the area.

According to health authorities, individuals present at the Tom Bradley International Terminal between 10 a.m. and noon on June 11 could have been exposed. Officials also noted possible exposure at the Hilton Hotel located at 5711 W. Century Blvd., between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. the same day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is collaborating with local health departments to alert passengers seated near the infected traveler on the flight.

Exposed individuals may develop symptoms between seven and 21 days after exposure, with July 2 being the last day to monitor for symptoms. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a rash that starts on the face and spreads.

Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer, advised, “As measles cases increase, it is important that residents take steps to make sure they are fully protected.” He emphasized the importance of the MMR vaccine as a reliable method to protect against measles.
