World Cup 2026 Team Previews and Analysis

2 weeks ago 0

The summer’s World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will showcase 48 teams, marking the first expansion from the traditional 32-team format that has been in place since 1998. With various debutants and nations not often seen on this stage, it promises to be an intriguing tournament.

Group A

Mexico

Mexico consistently participates in World Cups, only missing out due to a ban in 1990. As co-hosts for 2026, they qualified automatically. Historically, Mexico often performs well in the tournament but fell short in 2022, exiting at the group stage for the first time since 1978. Despite never advancing past the quarter-finals, they’ve been strong World Cup contenders.

Coached by Javier Aguirre, now in his third stint, Mexico has shifted to a more dynamic style, moving away from possession-focused tactics. Key player Raul Jimenez aims to shine in what may be his last World Cup, despite emerging talents like Santiago Gimenez.

Mexico’s squad is under intense pressure after 2022’s disappointing performance and failed tournaments between 2021-2023. With national pride on the line, a home World Cup presents a chance for redemption.

South Africa

South Africa qualified under controversial circumstances but eventually secured their spot. Known for strong technical talent, they aim to surpass their previous World Cup appearances, having never advanced past the group stage. Coach Hugo Broos, with his extensive experience, leads the side, balancing youth and experience.

Key player Ronwen Williams, known for excellent goalkeeping and penalty-saving capabilities, will be crucial for South Africa.

The squad mostly comprises players from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, who recently enjoyed domestic triumphs, providing confidence and familiarity.
