Netanyahu and Trump Discuss Middle East Tensions Amid Controversy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s request for his arrest under International Criminal Court warrants. Netanyahu addressed the comments during an interview on ‘Sunday Morning Futures.’ He confirmed plans to travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with President Donald Trump and attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

President Trump will host Netanyahu at the White House for discussions that could influence the U.S.-Iran standoff. There is a political undercurrent to the visit, with calls from some quarters to arrest the Israeli leader. Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, President of the Shurat HaDin Law Center, explained to Fox News Digital that meetings between Netanyahu and Trump frequently carry significant implications.

The decisions made by these two leaders will determine the next steps in dealing with Iran. The choices will affect whether the region moves towards stability or back into chaos.

Netanyahu’s visit to Washington includes attending a memorial service for Sen. Lindsey Graham, a friend to both Israel and Netanyahu. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also in D.C. for the service and plans to meet with Trump. The leaders’ conversations are crucial as Israel continues to advocate for a stronger stance on Iran.

President Trump praised Netanyahu as a wartime leader, speaking of their cooperative efforts on April 7, discussing Gaza and tariffs. However, the Israeli leader’s approach to Gaza and Iran has generated some controversy.

Mayor Mamdani had asked the federal government to execute the ICC arrest warrant during Netanyahu’s anticipated visit for the U.N. Assembly in September. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio supported calls for Netanyahu’s arrest, criticizing him for inciting hate. Despite a rare disagreement over handling Iran, Trump and Netanyahu’s bond appeared resilient.

Trump reportedly called Netanyahu “crazy” during a phone call related to Israel’s operations in Lebanon. Darshan-Leitner emphasized that while media might focus on apparent differences, the meeting aims to project unity and strength. Netanyahu plans to share intelligence with Trump, asserting Iran’s increased nuclear activity, according to reports.

During another summit at Mar-a-Lago in December 2025, discussions addressed renewed Iranian threats and potential progress on the Gaza peace initiative. Trump, while delaying military action against Iran, indicated readiness for a significant attack if required.

Trump stated Monday that negotiations with Iran were “good,” but warned of military action if talks failed. Darshan-Leitner highlighted the stakes, spanning Iran’s nuclear goals, U.S. base security, the Strait of Hormuz, and maritime trade freedom. She underscored the necessity for pairing diplomacy with deterrence.
