Netanyahu Criticizes NYC Mayor for Alleged Hate and Fear Climate

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of promoting hatred and instilling fear among Jewish Americans in New York City. This follows Mamdani’s comments labeling Netanyahu a ‘war criminal’ and threats to arrest him.

New York State Assemblyman Michael Novakhov, representing Brooklyn’s District 45, has called on the U.S. Department of Justice to initiate a civil rights investigation into Mayor Mamdani. This appeal comes after two stabbings in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, currently being investigated as potential hate crimes.

During an End Jew Hatred rally in New York City, Novakhov stressed the need for action. He referenced a past federal probe into alleged antisemitism at Columbia University, emphasizing the need for similar protection for Jewish New Yorkers. Novakhov shared his demands on Instagram, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The recent attack victims, Chok Sung, 57, and Moshe Grunhaus, 50, are reported to be in stable condition. Arrested suspect Raul Morales, 51, allegedly shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ while committing the attacks on Thursday. The incidents took place in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood during Tisha B’Av, a day of mourning for the destruction of Jerusalem’s First and Second Temples.

Novakhov’s formal request to the DOJ seeks to investigate Mamdani and the alleged hostility towards the Jewish community. He expressed the desire for Jewish New Yorkers to freely express their identity without fear, asserting that ‘no one is above the law.’

Jewish leaders have raised concerns following Mamdani’s remarks about Netanyahu. Despite the lack of jurisdiction by the International Criminal Court in the U.S., Mamdani supports accountability for Netanyahu, who he accused of significant wrongdoing against Palestinians.
