Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson headline in “Voicemails for Isabelle,” a new Netflix film that marries classic romantic comedy elements with a touching narrative about sisterhood. Zoey portrays Jill, an aspiring baker working under an egotistical chef played by Nick Offerman. Jill’s ambition for culinary success is disrupted by the death of her younger sister Isabelle, portrayed by Ciara Bravo, who battled cystic fibrosis. Struggling with the loss, Jill leaves voicemails on Isabelle’s number.
In an unexpected twist, Isabelle’s number ends up with Wes, played by Nick Robinson. As Wes hears the messages, he decides to seek out Jill in San Francisco, setting the stage for the unfolding story.
The film is crafted by Leah McKendrick, a talented writer and director, known for “Scrambled,” which gained attention for its blend of tap dance comedy and challenging themes in 2023. McKendrick expertly handles the blend of tragedy and romantic comedy in “Voicemails for Isabelle,” achieving success in both aspects.
Leah McKendrick discussed her experience working on this movie, including the challenges of balancing its tone. She shared insights about the editing process and highlighted Nick Robinson’s appeal. Drawing inspiration from her own sibling relationship, McKendrick recounted the project’s development, from its initial setbacks to its final realization.
