Houston, June 20, 2023 — The Netherlands showcased their prowess in a 5-1 victory over Sweden during the World Cup match on Saturday. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scored twice, leading the Netherlands to overcome an initial draw and secure the top spot in Group F.
Brobbey was instrumental in the first half, helping the Netherlands gain an early advantage after a 2-2 draw against Japan in their opening game. With this victory, the Netherlands now leads the group with four points. Sweden follows with three points, while Japan and Tunisia are set to play later on Saturday.
Gakpo enhanced the Netherlands’ lead shortly after halftime. He scored in the 47th minute with a skillful finish from a Denzel Dumfries cross. The midfielder equalized Brobbey’s tally in the 54th minute, securing a right-footed goal from the left box.
Sweden was unable to build upon their earlier triumph against Tunisia, where they won 5-1. The loss marks Sweden’s most significant World Cup defeat since a 7-1 setback against Brazil in 1950.
The Dutch strategy of exploiting the flanks and crossing to Brobbey proved effective early in the match. The Netherlands took the lead in just the fifth minute, with Brobbey converting a Gakpo cross while tumbling forward.
Brobbey’s second goal unfolded as he deftly connected with a Dumfries cross, nudging the ball inside the far post during a slide in the 17th minute.
Sweden managed to avoid a complete shutout through a goal by Anthony Elanga, reducing the margin to 4-1 in the 59th minute. Despite numerous opportunities earlier in the game, Netherlands’ goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was crucial, making four saves in the first half.
Sweden appeared to have closed the gap with a header by Gustaf Lagerbielke in the 44th minute, but it was disallowed due to offside. Lagerbielke is a titled baron from a noble Swedish lineage, joining the ranks of royalty present at the match.
The stadium had the honor of hosting King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The royal pair watched from a luxury suite and supported their team on an inspiring day.
The match drew a crowd of 68,777, predominantly fans of the Netherlands. Many attended the event via the Oranje Fanwalk, a festive procession from Rice University to Houston Stadium on Saturday morning.
Crysencio Summerville, who played a vital role in assisting Gakpo’s second goal, added another goal for the Netherlands in the 89th minute, celebrating with basketball star Steph Curry’s signature “night night” gesture.
Looking ahead, Sweden’s group play concludes Thursday evening against Japan at Dallas Stadium. Concurrently, the Netherlands will face Tunisia that same night in Kansas City.
