Obama Surprises WNBA All-Stars at Presidential Center

Former President Barack Obama surprised the WNBA All-Stars on Friday at his Presidential Center in Chicago. Caitlin Clark, a player from the Indiana Fever, expressed her excitement after meeting with Obama, describing their conversation as a memorable moment. Clark mentioned how Obama complimented her on handling media attention, sharing his own experiences with fame.

Obama addressed the players briefly on the center’s basketball court. He praised their contributions to the sport and their impact off the court. “The way the game has been growing, the recognition of your excellence is thrilling for basketball fans,” he stated. After his talk, Obama took photos with the players, including Clark, and expressed appreciation for their ventures outside basketball.

“I know many of you are involved in wonderful ventures off the court, looking out for young people and inspiring them,” Obama said. “I just wanted to say thanks.”

During the visit, Obama interacted with several players, including a brief playful exchange with Jonquel Jones of the New York Liberty. Jones expressed admiration for Obama, acknowledging him as a role model. “Someone I look up to, who has paved the way for many,” she noted.

Obama shared that he no longer plays intense basketball to protect his Achilles but broke in the court with a casual “horse” game. As a gesture of appreciation, the players presented Obama with a No. 44 WNBA All-Star jersey.

Obama’s connection to basketball highlights his long-standing support for the WNBA, which includes attending games and hosting players at the White House following their championships. Although he couldn’t attend the All-Star Game on Saturday, Obama left a significant mark by meeting the players.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert noted the significance of hosting the players at the Presidential Center. She emphasized the inspiration Obama provides through his achievements and his connection to basketball.

After meeting the players, Obama spoke with league investors and nearly 100 high school girls at the center, capping a memorable day for those present.
