Yair Lapid, Israel’s opposition leader, criticized a developing agreement between the U.S. and Iran. He stated that the deal does not meet any of Israel’s objectives regarding the ongoing conflict. Lapid accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of failing to secure a better agreement through effective influence.
Lapid, aligned with those challenging Netanyahu in upcoming elections, referred to the deal details as “disturbing.” According to him, it negatively impacts Israel, the region, and Iran’s citizens. The original intention was to dismantle Iran’s ballistic missile program, halt its support for militant groups, and prevent nuclear bomb development.
Under the discussed deal, Iran would relinquish its enriched uranium stockpile and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. In return, the U.S. would lift its blockade of Iranian ports and sanctions. Key aspects of Iran’s nuclear program would later be discussed, but speculation remains regarding the inclusion of their missile capabilities or militant support.
Lapid thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for initiating the conflict but criticized Netanyahu for minimal cooperation with Washington on the deal. Trump has been quoted saying that Netanyahu would comply with his directives. Despite this, Israel asserts its autonomy in addressing threats.
The criticism comes amid political tension in Israel. Lapid leads the Yesh Atid party and has allied with Naftali Bennett to challenge Netanyahu. Their previous coalition briefly ended Netanyahu’s long rule in 2022. Their alliance aims to consolidate opposition forces against Netanyahu.
A supporter of Palestinian independence, Lapid recognizes that the current climate post-Hamas attacks and regional conflicts is unsuitable for a two-state solution. He argues against unilateral moves that undermine future Palestinian statehood and has secured concessions from Bennett to avoid annexing occupied territories.
Lapid ruled out coalition-building with Arab political parties, despite prior collaboration with Mansour Abbas, leader of an Arab faction. While such cooperation was previously strategic, current circumstances differ following years of warfare, according to Lapid and Bennett.
