After a challenging World Cup debut, Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal showcased his talent at Atlanta Stadium on Sunday. Initially criticized for his performance, Oyarzabal became notable for failing to touch the ball in the first 30 minutes of a match. However, his recent game tells a different story.
In Spain’s 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, Oyarzabal made history. He delivered two goals and one assist within the opening 25 minutes. This made him the second player in World Cup history to achieve three goal contributions so early in a match. The last player to do so was László Fazekas in 1982.
“The impact Mikel has on the team is massive, probably bigger than any other player could have in the world,” said Spain coach Luis De La Fuente.
His precise assist allowed 18-year-old Lamine Yamal to score at the 10-minute mark. Oyarzabal then scored twice in quick succession, further cementing Spain’s lead. He ended the first half with five shots, three of which were on target.
Despite these achievements, Oyarzabal remains focused on team success rather than individual records.
“In the end, it’s an anecdote. I don’t give any importance to it. It is what it is. I’m happy to have scored, to have helped the team,” he remarked.
The 29-year-old emphasized the importance of improving and moving forward after past performances.
“When you don’t do things well, when things don’t go your way, you criticize yourself, you look internally to try to improve,” he explained.
Oyarzabal’s determined attitude was key to Spain’s turnaround, offering hope for future matches.
