Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Pennsylvania offers a unique experience. Unlike many modern parks that have expensive entry fees, Knoebels has been admission-free since it opened on July 4, 1926. As the park approaches its 100th anniversary, it stands out in an era of costly theme parks.
It’s who we are. It’s that traditional park.
Park owner Brian Knoebel emphasized the importance of maintaining this free-admission model. He promised to never change this tradition. Knoebels attracts many visitors, including grandparents. They often enjoy watching their grandchildren without any additional expenses.
The amusement park began as a simple family venture. Knoebel’s ancestors, originally from Germany, worked as lumberers and established the park. At first, families would gather for picnics after church. The park’s offerings gradually expanded.
How has it changed? The park began with a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a carousel. Now, it features 60 rides, 38 food stands, games, and water slides. There’s also an 18-hole golf course nearby.
Knoebels retains its old-fashioned atmosphere. It boasts shaded walkways and classic attractions. This contributes to its lasting appeal.
The park maintains a simple pricing approach: no general admission fee. Guests pay only for what they want once inside. This makes Knoebels the largest free-admission park in the United States.
