Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner holds a narrow lead over incumbent Republican Susan Collins. A recent poll, conducted by Tavern Research, shows Platner at 51% against Collins’ 49%, with a margin of error of 2.8%. The survey included 1,642 respondents from Maine, conducted from June 5 to June 8.
Platner, a 41-year-old Marine Corps veteran, is running in the Maine primary against David Costello. Allegations from former romantic partners have brought scrutiny to his campaign. Platner has denied these allegations, labeling them politically motivated. The New York Times reported that some former partners have accused Platner of threatening behavior.
Lyndsey Fifield, a former girlfriend, claimed Platner engaged in physically threatening acts over a decade ago. She shared a specific incident where Platner twisted her arm and blocked her way during an argument. Fifield clarified that Platner never hit or punched her.
The Times published the accounts following their reporting standards, despite criticism from Fifield over the representation of her story. Platner addressed the controversy at a Bar Harbor rally, thanking supporters for their loyalty and understanding during these challenging times. He referenced his personal journey, including dealing with PTSD and past comments made online.
Polls report varying figures, further underscoring the competitive nature of the race. Public Policy Polling has Platner leading Collins by four points, 49% to 45%, with undecided voters making up 6%. This survey interviewed 670 registered voters from June 2 to June 3 and had a margin of error of 3.8%.
An additional poll by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center shows Platner at 51% and Collins at 42%. Conducted among 1,280 likely general-election voters from May 21 to May 25, it reported a margin of error of 2.7%.
