In Alabama, Rep. Barry Moore, supported by Trump, defeated rival Jared Hudson in the GOP Senate runoff. Moore’s victory demonstrated Trump’s continued sway in the state.
Victories and Defeats
In Georgia, Rep. Mike Collins, also backed by Trump, secured a win in the Republican Senate runoff. Collins defeated Derek Dooley, endorsed by Governor Brian Kemp. This sets Collins up to face Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in the upcoming general election.
However, in Georgia’s gubernatorial runoff, Trump-backed Lt. Gov. Burt Jones lost to Rick Jackson, an outsider candidate. Jackson, who praised Trump, managed to defeat Jones despite Trump’s endorsement.
Trump’s Endorsement Power
Trump’s endorsement power was a significant factor in several primaries over recent weeks. His endorsed candidates succeeded in Indiana, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Texas. Yet, his endorsement of Randy Feenstra in Iowa’s GOP gubernatorial primary did not lead to victory, as Feenstra was narrowly beaten by Zach Lahn.
Trump regained momentum in South Carolina, where his endorsed candidate, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, advanced in the gubernatorial primary. Additionally, Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham won the Republican Senate primary, avoiding a runoff.
Analyzing the Results
A Trump operative highlighted that Rick Jackson’s heavy spending in Georgia played a crucial role in his victory over the Trump-backed candidate. Jackson’s campaign heavily emphasized his alignment with Trump’s principles.
Veteran Republican strategist Matt Gorman remarked that while Trump’s endorsement provides significant value, it cannot ensure victory. Unifying the party for the upcoming fall elections is a key focus.
Sen. Ted Cruz, who endorsed Jackson at the last moment, joined him on the campaign trail and emphasized the importance of winning Georgia. Cruz also discussed his approach to endorsements, stating his goal is to support the strongest conservative candidate capable of winning.
These developments indicate that Trump’s influence remains substantial, but it is not infallible in determining primary outcomes.
