Pope Leo XIV Announces Encyclical Addressing AI and Global Concerns

1 week ago 0

Pope Leo XIV has released his first encyclical, laying out a comprehensive vision for the Catholic Church’s response to modern challenges. Titled Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence, the 235-page document addresses key global issues such as artificial intelligence (AI), warfare, migration, and historical injustices.

Artificial Intelligence

Central to the encyclical is a concern about AI’s growing impact. Pope Leo acknowledges the progress AI has brought but warns of potential risks if the technology is not aligned with the common good. He stresses the need for wisdom in interpreting technological trends and calls for diverse perspectives in AI development to avoid systems that could dehumanize society.

Pope Leo advocates for governmental regulation of AI development and robust legal frameworks to monitor corporate activities. He emphasizes the need for worker protections, training programs, and better education systems to equip students for navigating AI-generated content.

The pope also underscores the importance of protecting children from harmful online content amplified by AI. He emphasizes the choice between building a cohesive society or pursuing detrimental technological paths.

“Just War” Theory and Modern Conflict

Pope Leo critiques the traditional “just war” theory, arguing that AI’s role in modern warfare detaches conflicts from human responsibility. He calls for diplomacy and dialogue instead of violence, highlighting the destructive impact of war on civilians.

The pope warns against autonomous weapons, stating they lower the threshold for violence by reducing human oversight. He insists that moral decisions in warfare cannot be entrusted to AI.

Migrant Treatment as a Moral Measure

Addressing migration, Pope Leo describes the treatment of migrants and refugees as a reflection of social justice. He calls for safe migration pathways and opportunities for integration while urging governments to tackle the root causes of forced migration, such as economic inequality and climate change.

The Church’s Acknowledgment of Historical Wrongs

The encyclical also confronts the Catholic Church’s past involvement in slavery and colonialism. Pope Leo acknowledges the Church’s delayed condemnation of slavery and asks for forgiveness for its role in supporting oppressive systems. He refers to the Vatican’s historical decrees that facilitated colonial expansion and their recent repudiation in 2023.
