June 5, 2026: President Trump called for mass firings within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, suggesting that certain employees, especially those with ties to previous Democratic administrations, should be removed.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Trump discussed his interim choice to lead the agency, Bill Pulte. Mr. Trump believes Pulte will have more freedom because he is not seeking permanent leadership of the agency.
It sort of gives you more power, you know, for a somewhat limited period of time,
Mr. Trump stated, referencing the flexibility of Pulte’s temporary role.
This comment marks one of Trump’s most detailed statements about Pulte, who currently leads the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Pulte lacks experience in national security.
Pulte was announced as Trump’s pick on Monday, following the departure of Tulsi Gabbard from the director position. Trump does not plan to nominate Pulte for Senate confirmation for a permanent role. Pulte’s previous confirmation allows him to serve in this interim capacity for up to 210 days.
Pulte is known for supporting Trump and identifying alleged crimes by those viewed as Trump’s political opponents. These include people involved in investigations against Trump or associated with institutions like the Federal Reserve which the president believes have acted with political motives against him.
