In Southampton, England, eleven police officers suffered injuries as demonstrators clashed with them on Tuesday night. British officials, including a cabinet minister, condemned the violence, labeling the events as ‘unacceptable.’
The unrest followed the public release of footage showing an incident from last December where police handcuffed a murder victim, Henry Nowak, while his attacker remained present. This led to accusations of racial bias against the British police by right-wing figures.
On Tuesday evening, hundreds gathered outside Southampton’s main police station to protest. Attempts were made to enter the street where the murderer’s family resides, resulting in clashes with officers blocking entry. Elsewhere in the city, protesters hurled rocks, flares, and garbage cans at the police. Some participants were seen attacking with punches and kicks, targeting officers’ riot shields, and many demonstrators were draped in British flags.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, responsible for policing oversight, criticized the violent acts. ‘There can be no justification for hijacking this tragedy to stir up violence and disorder,’ she stated. Ms. Mahmood assured that those responsible would face legal repercussions, praising the police for their bravery and composure amid the unrest.
