A pet owner faced an unexpected challenge when leaving her puppy home alone for the first time. Heber, the owner of a 3-month-old Pomeranian named Marky, undertook a brief 30-minute errand, unaware of the ensuing drama. Despite her initial hesitance to leave Marky alone, she knew the day would come when she had to try it.
Once out, she checked the pet camera. To her dismay, she saw what appeared to be a protest against her absence. On May 25, Heber shared this on Instagram via the dog’s account, @markyandmilly. The footage showed Marky persistently crying, seemingly pleading for the family’s return. “It must have started the second we left!” Heber remarked, admitting she would regret the decision in the years to come.
It wasn’t just about the cries. Marky also demonstrated his escape talents by leaping over the crate’s top. Heber decided to “retire the crate” after recognizing that it wouldn’t work for him, given his breakout prowess. The decision was fruitful: “We decided to let him free roam,” Heber shared, adding that Marky has been a much happier pup since. The family has since expanded too, with a new “little sister” for Marky, ensuring he has company during the day.
Crate or No Crate?
Crate training is a common method for dog owners, especially during a puppy’s initial stages, yet opinions vary on its efficacy. Experts emphasize that crates should provide a safe, secure environment, never be used as punishment. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), crates can become a dog’s personal haven for rest and security. They also aid in house training and preventing damage when unsupervised.
However, no universal rule applies. The AKC advises against forcing dogs into crates or associating them with negative experiences, as this can lead to aversion. Instead, positive associations should be formed gradually, encouraging voluntary use of the crate.
