The Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial was intended to look immaculate after a recent renovation, but nature had other ideas. Just days after a $14.2 million enhancement project was completed, algae blooms altered the pool’s appearance.
The Trump administration’s project aimed to address long-standing issues of leaks and algal growth. However, consecutive hot and humid days encouraged the return of algae. This has resulted in patches of green disrupting the newly added dark blue waterproofing intended for the pool’s floor.
Interior Department representatives were unavailable for comments. Katie Martin, the department spokeswoman, stated that the remaining algae in the supply lines were due to the dormant period during renovations. She assured that the algae would soon be cleared.
President Trump, who criticized the pool’s previous condition, claimed the new changes would enhance its beauty. The waterproofing material chosen was branded as “American flag blue.”
The project involved awarding direct contracts to two vendors, bypassing the typical competitive bidding process. This decision was justified by the impending 250th national birthday celebrations. Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a Virginia company, was tasked with sealing and waterproofing the pool. Meanwhile, Ohio-based Greenwater Services received a contract for an improved water-purification system.
The work by Atlantic Industrial Coatings concluded on June 4, followed by the pool’s refilling. It’s still uncertain if the new purification system is fully operational.
During the weekend, National Park Service workers attempted to remove algae manually. They were aided by Pearl Purity Water Solutions, contracted since 2021 to maintain the pool water’s cleanliness.
Despite acknowledging the algae presence, visitors like Bonnie Garvin from Georgia seemed unworried as she noted the visual change was a minor concern for her. In contrast, Jessica Lea from Oregon expressed dissatisfaction, remarking on the pool’s lack of clarity and reflective quality.
