Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., expressed his willingness to support a temporary agreement with Iran, following President Donald Trump’s statement that a deal with Tehran is nearly finalized. Massie emphasized the economic difficulties faced by Americans due to the ongoing conflict. “Heck yes, I would support it!” Massie declared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when questioned about the Iran deal. He expressed optimism about the terms of the agreement, mentioning that if senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz oppose it, it might be beneficial.
Massie has consistently critiqued U.S. military actions overseas, connecting his support for the deal to rising fuel costs affecting his constituents. “My constituents are hurting,” he pointed out. “Gas is approaching $5 a gallon. Diesel nearly $6. Farmers in Kentucky find it tough to afford fertilizer.” The Kentucky Republican tied the local economic strain to the broader Iran situation.
Although recently losing his Republican primary after serving seven congressional terms, Massie defended his independent position in Washington, claiming his commitment to not toeing the party line cost him politically. “Since day one in Washington D.C., I’ve approached this role in the way the public desires,” he stated. “I scrutinize bills, retain my voting card, and prioritize people over party. This approach often places me at odds, but it’s for the constituents.” He attributed his primary defeat to his bipartisan attempts, notably collaborating with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna on key legislation.
Criticizing external financial influences on his campaign, Massie remarked, “They failed to influence my vote for 14 years, so they bought this seat. This race became the costliest in congressional primary history.” He warned Republicans about potential setbacks in upcoming midterms due to party divisions alienating parts of Trump’s coalition.
Massie expressed discontent with GOP leadership, particularly regarding financial debates in Congress. He exemplified this by criticizing a proposed White House ballroom, calling it an excessive expenditure. Massie pressed the importance of addressing domestic economic issues rather than excessive federal spending and foreign engagements. “Our operations mirror a Roman Empire. We’re spread thin overseas, indulging in unnecessary expenses while our citizens struggle with basic living costs,” he stressed.
On Saturday, Trump announced on Truth Social that negotiations with Iran were almost complete. However, details of the deal remained undisclosed as of Sunday.
Fox News Digital attempted to reach senators Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham for their remarks but received no immediate response.
