Russian Authorities Prevent Smuggling of Meteorite Fragment

4 months ago 0

Russian authorities have successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle a massive meteorite fragment to the United Kingdom, according to a report by the Federal Customs Service on Thursday. The meteorite piece, which weighs approximately 2.8 tons, is believed to originate from the Aletai meteorite, one of the largest iron meteorites on record.

Seizure at Saint Petersburg’s Port

An investigation into the smuggling operation is currently underway. The customs service disclosed that the significant cargo was uncovered during a routine check of a sea container at Saint Petersburg’s port. The fragment was initially declared as a simple garden ornament, but a closer inspection revealed discrepancies in both its origin and reported value.

The strategically important cargo was discovered during checks on a sea container at the port of Saint Petersburg.

An image from a video shared by the Russian Federal Customs Service in conjunction with Russia’s TASS news agency captures an official examining the meteorite piece that was intercepted on February 5, 2026. The customs officers, as shown in the video, had to pry open the crate to unveil the rugged, grey surface of the rock.

Monetary and Scientific Value of the Fragment

The seized fragment could fetch a value of around 323 million rubles, equivalent to $4.2 million. The statement did not specify the identity of the person or group attempting to import the meteorite fragment into the UK.

Ethical Implications of Meteorite Sales

Scientists have raised ethical issues concerning the commercialization of meteorites. These celestial fragments are not only highly sought after for their monetary value but also hold critical scientific data about the composition of the early solar system.

The Aletai meteorite, from which the fragment purportedly comes, was first discovered in western China in 1898. It is estimated to be over 4.5 billion years old and is among the many meteorites that occasionally land on Earth. A similar-aged meteorite made headlines last year when it pierced the roof of a house in the U.S. state of Georgia, witnessed as a brilliant fireball streaking across the sky.
